America's Mediterranean: The importance of the Mexican Gulf Coast in Ancient American Civilization
Meet and Greet at 5:30 p.m. Lecture at 6:00 p.m. in building B, room 102 (B-102)
The Gulf Coast of Mexico was home to some Ancient American's earliest and most vibrant cultures. Long known for the precocious Olmec civilization, it is no clear that the Gulf Coast produced another striking civilization that is just now coming to light. Called Classic Veracruz by archaeologists, this culture held sway along the Gulf between c. AD 100-1000, trading with both the mountainous Central Mexican region and the Maya people just to the east. Join the Lyceum Series and Rex Koontz as we explore this little known region and its emerging archaoelogy and art.
