ENGR 1304 Student Design Projects

Each semester, the students in Foundations of Engineering I (ENGR 1304) are split into "companies" (teams of 3-4 students).  Each company is asked to meet with a person at Lone Star College–Montgomery (the "customer") who has presented a design challenge.  Over the semester, each company must follow the engineering design process to problem-solve, brainstorm, and build a design that meets the needs of their customer.  Below are some of the results of those design projects.

For the Wellness Center staff to enter the work area behind the front desk was difficult and dangerous. To move behind the desk, an employee would need to lift a large and heavy slab of wood and walk under that slab. Occasionally the slab would drop on one side or the other. To solve this problem, the ENGR 1304 students designed and built this new door. photo

The "Montgomery College Saw Dogs" vintage base ball team plays by rules of the 1860's. An old-style scoreboard was needed to keep the crowd informed of the game's score. ENGR 1304 students built and installed this vintage scoreboard to be used at the Saw Dogs' home games.

Concerts held in the Building A Commons were fun for all, but the bands didn't have much of a stage.  ENGR 1304 students of 2007 built this stage that not only gives a high-profile spot for the band, but a portion of the stage can slide away from the wall, giving access to the maintenance closet that it covers.    photo

photo ENGR 1304 students of 2007 wanted to help future ENGR 1304 students! Since a significant part of the course is spent covering orthographic projections (making two-dimensional drawings of three-dimensional objects), this group created a model to demonstrate how orthographic projections are done.

What's in these boxes? Ask the Biology students! The boxes, designed by a group from the 2007 class of ENGR 1304 students, are "black boxes" that have tricky mechanisms on the inside. Biology students must employ their problem solving skills to determine what is happening on the inside of each box. photo

photo Astronomy is a growing program at Lone Star College–Montgomery, and the instructors were looking for a permanent telescope mount on the campus. ENGR 1304 students came up with a design and put in lots of hard work to build this pier where our telescopes can be easily secured for great star viewing by students, community, and employees!

With the growth at Lone Star College–Montgomery, space is always lacking. In the Wellness Center, exercise equipment storage was the issue here. Their exercise mats are difficult to store, and sometimes were being placed on the closet floor where they were slowly being damaged. ENGR 1304 students worked closely with the staff to come up with a design that meets their needs. photo

photo At the Conroe Center satellite campus, there was no place to leave library books after hours.  One group from the 2007 class of ENGR 1304 constructed this book drop to be secure and weatherproof.

Teaching Geology requires the use of maps, but holding a large map while teaching the class is awkward, if not impossible.  To make this particular map of North America viewable for an entire class, ENGR 1304 students built this portable frame in 2006.   photo
