Getting Hooked: Addictive Personalities
Presenter: Henry Pittman, MA, LCDC
The topic of whether one can have an "addictive personality" types has raised a number of issues in the counseling field over the past several years. What are the features of an "addictive personality", and what do we know about role neurobiology, genetics, environmental and psychology/emotions play within them? This seminar will address all of these issues, including an overview of what the latest research findings reveal to us and what implications they pose for treatment.
Learning Outcomes
- Compare and contrast the various schools of thought related to the development of addictive personality traits within a person.
- Name the basic definition of what is referred to when speaking of "addictive personality traits"
& identify at least three behaviors that one with addictive personality traits may often engage in. - Define what recent research has shown us related to the role of neurobiology and genetics with regard to the development of addictive personality traits within the individual.
Henry M. Pittman has over 10 years of clinical experience working with substance users ranging from various populations and settings, corrections, residential, outpatient, therapeutic communities and hospitals. Employed at Cypress Creek Hospital and also has a private practice, Therapeutic Alliance, LLC. He holds two licensures as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and AcuDetox Specialist; and complimentary certifications: Board Certified Professional Counselor, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, Certified Anger Resolution Therapist, Parent Coordinator, and Certified Community Family Educator; also pursuing a doctoral degree in Human Services, Counseling Studies at Capella University.

Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder - Where Are We Now?
Presenter: Dr. Sheri Gaines, MD - Staff Psychiatrist
Learning Outcomes
- Name at least three significant research discoveries made in the past 25 years related to the disorder.
- Identify at least two known treatment approaches that have been proven to be effective in treating individuals with this disorder.
- Distinguish between at least two of the common psychotropic medications used today to treat individuals with this disorder.
The past 25 years have been characterized by both intense scrutiny, discussion and debate regarding Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder. This dialogue has ranged from struggling to understand the causes of the disorder, what treatment approaches are most effective, and whether adults can be diagnosed with ADHD. This seminar will address what we have learned about this disorder, where are we now with regard to understanding its cause and its treatment, and will address the major questions still left to be answered.

Dr. Sheri Gaines received her Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. She then went to the University of Texas Medical School at Houston where she received her Medical Degree. Following that, she completed residency in psychiatry and fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at UT Houston where she served as Chief Resident. She is Board Certified in adult, adolescent, and child psychiatry.
Dr. Gaines has presented locally and nationally on a variety of topics including ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Psychopharmacology, and Commitment of Sexually Violent Predators. She has over ten years experience as a forensic expert witness. She currently serves on the Speaker's Bureau for Forrest Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Gaines has worked in a variety of clinical settings including private practice, public health, correctional care, hospitals, and residential treatment centers. She has over ten years experience with diagnosing and treating seniors, adults, adolescents, and children with a variety of diagnoses specializing in working with people previously unresponsive to treatment by emphasizing education about symptoms, medication, and other treatment modalities. She has had the opportunity to work in many settings that utilize a multidisciplinary treatment approach.
