Reference Librarian

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

In order to promote and support student learning, it is the responsibility of the reference librarian faculty to provide and disseminate information services in support of the college’s mission to provide quality educational programs to a divers student population. The librarian’s role encompasses the general areas of learning facilitation, personal and professional development, and institutional and community service. Reference services may include developing or acquiring instructional materials and providing assistance to the college community in the use of research technology and materials. The reference librarian faculty will contribute to the educational environment of the college by teaching information literacy and providing support for classroom learning.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Learning Facilitation

  1. Instruct students, faculty, and other library users in accessing and using print, audio-visual, and electronic information resources.

  2. Plan and develop a variety of instructional materials using appropriate technologies that will assist students in meeting their research needs.

  3. Promote the use of general and subject-oriented print and electronic research guides and other instructional materials.

  4. Plan, organize, and deliver research instruction in ways which maximize student learning and information literacy.

  5. Maintain a study atmosphere conducive to student learning.

  6. Evaluate, acquire, and provide access to information resources in a variety of formats to support student learning.

  7. Maintain professional working relationships with students, colleagues, and other library users.

  8. Assist students and faculty by supporting specific programs or course research needs.

  9. Provide reference assistance during the day, evenings, and weekends to meet student, faculty, and community research needs.

  10. Interpret policies and procedures for library users.

  11. Personal and Professional Development

  12. Establish annual objectives, including personal and professional growth plans in consultation with the library director.

  13. Maintain professional standards of competence within the field of information services and technology through professional development activities.

  14. Participate in the evaluation process for self, department, and college.

  15. Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods.

  16. Institutional and Community Service

  17. Participate in scheduled institutional service activities which include opening week events, conference day, and commencement exercises.

  18. Develop plans, policies, and programs to assure effective library service and a smooth flow of library operations.

  19. Actively participate in department, college, or district meetings and/or committees.

  20. Be familiar with and adhere to all policies and procedures of the district.

  21. Participate in college-related activities such as registration, community education, recruitment of students, selection of faculty, student activities, and/or special programs.

  22. Review, evaluate, and revise programs and practices to meet professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, and community business/industry research needs.

  23. Participate in the college planning process by assisting in the formulation of objectives and goals, establishing budget priorities, and contributing to plans for facilities and programs.

  24. Review library activities and submit budgets, monthly reports, annual reports, and other reports, as needed.

  25. Foster partnerships with local community organizations, schools, and libraries.

  26. Perform other duties as determined in consultation with the library director.
