Academic Counselor

REPORTS TO:  Director/Assistant Dean

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The counselor will be involved in working with probation and suspension students, developing an early alert program for students in academic difficulty, working with Development Studies faculty. In order to promote and support student learning, it is the responsibility of the counselor to provide individual and/or group counseling services to all students enrolled in the college. The services may include pre-enrollment counseling, educational, academic, career, and personal counseling.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Counsel students with personal, social, educational, and career concerns.
  • Facilitate the transition of new students into the college environment.
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community.
  • Cooperate in developing an effective occupational information service for students.
  • Provide information and services for students with special needs adhering to ADA and 504 regulations.
  • Provide information and assessment services to support student learning and attainment of career goals.
  • Maintain current knowledge of theory, practice, and ethics within the counseling profession through professional development activities.
  • Works with students on probation and suspension, students experiencing difficulties that interfere with college, Developmental Studies faculty, and students who have special needs.
  • Develops and delivers workshops on study skills.
  • Develops an early alert system for students in academic difficulty.
  • Performs other reasonable duties as assigned within area of responsibility.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or Related Field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy of the community college.
  • Excellent counseling skills.
  • Computer literate.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, and administration.
  • Understanding of students in academic difficulty.

EQUIPMENT USED:

PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment.

CONTACTS:

Administrators, faculty, staff and students as necessary to provide or obtain information and to perform the general functions of the job.

COMPLEXITY/EFFORT:

Variety of tasks related to counseling and outreach functions. Excellent communication skills and an understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed primarily in a climate-controlled environment, however, some travel is involved.
