REPORTS TO: Manager, Extended Learning Center

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

This position is responsible for coordinating and implementing academic support programs in learning, academic, and library assessment support Center(s). Duties include coordinating and developing tutors, part-time and student workers. May conduct workshops for students/faculty on subjects related to center’s services. Provides individual assistance to students and faculty on locating and using materials, equipment and programs within center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Supervises, trains, schedules, establishes work priorities for tutors, part-time and student workers. Provides professional develop to tutors for certification.

  2. Organizes and maintains learning support materials. May include software and hardware maintenance.

  3. Adapts and develops programs and study materials; researches and recommends purchase of new materials or program changes.

  4. Develops and delivers workshops on a variety of learning topics.

  5. Works individually with students to assist them academically, particularly those who have not mastered independent materials.

  6. Serves as a liaison to faculty in the counseling office and divisions to provide seamless academic support to students.

  7. Assists students in transfer of skills to work in their content courses.

  8. Works with faculty and staff to coordinate academic and center program activities and materials.

  9. May write and publish informational materials for center.

  10. May troubleshoot equipment/software for individual learners.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree. Three+ years related work experience. Requires knowledge in use of personal computers, word processing, tutorial software as well as Internet/WWW knowledge and the ability to quickly learn new instructional software programs. Job requires excellent interpersonal skills for working with students, faculty, and staff; ability to teach and communicate well, both verbally and in writing; good organizational skills; ability to assume responsibility for independent action.

EQUIPMENT USED:

PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, programming, word processing and tutorial software, calculator, phone and other general office equipment. May require knowledge of Macintosh equipment as well as printers and scanners.

CONTACTS:

Contact with faculty and staff as necessary to carry out the general duties of the position.

COMPLEXITY/EFFORT:

Job involves teaching, including one-on-one tutoring; assisting students with computer and study problems; flexibility and ability to cope with constant interruptions. Job duties little physical effort and few safety precautions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed primarily in a climate-controlled open area readily accessible to students and staff.
