PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Performs operation of offset printing press, high-speed copiers, digital duplicators and other equipment requiring specific training. Must also be capable of operating less technical equipment used in the print shop. Performs basic clerical and customer support duties as required for activities of the department assigned. Work is performed under limited supervision. Incumbent assumes duties of supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Determine equipment, plates, ink and stock to be used for each print jobs requested.
Operates the offset press and high-quality printers to produce requested work products.
Operate all copiers, duplicators, and binding equipment in the print shop.
Create mask-up and develop metal plates.
Maintains chemicals in cameras.
Determine the price based on materials used and due date requested and post the price to and sign the completed Printing Request Form.
Track inventory of supplies and compile a report to the supervisor for reorder.
Establishes and maintains order in specifically assigned areas.
Assist with training of part-time students and other workers.
Performs customer support functions, including assistance with design layouts and selection of materials.
Assume the duties of supervisor in his/her absence.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma, GED or related work experience required. Trained in fundamentals of photo-offset methods. Experience in use of printing and duplicating equipment. Familiar with technical terms related to the job. Good interpersonal and organizational skills required. Knowledge of safety precautions for lifting, and trip hazards. Must be able to read, and to write legibly and to follow instructions.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Specific duplicating and printing equipment such as A. B. Dick 360, Kodak 250 and 235 Copiers, and other general equipment used in copying, printing, binding and packaging printed materials. General use of PC and general office equipment.
CONTACTS:
Internal: Contact with college staff as necessary to carry out the general duties of the position.
External: Regular and routine contact with student assistance.
COMPLEXITY/EFFORT:
May require ability to physically lift, load and unload thirty-five (35) pound packages, boxes, crates or other items. Must be able to apply safety methods to tasks such as those involving moving gears, sharp cutting blades, and chemicals. Routine vehicle safety precautions must be observed at all times for positions requiring driving and operating motor vehicles. Lifting safety and tripping safety precautions must be observed as necessary to carry out the duties of this position.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a print shop where some chemicals and hazardous waste products are present. Work is managed and produced to meet specific schedules on a daily basis. Shift work or overtime may apply.
