Service Learning

Service Learning

Service Learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service Learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community.

Community Service Learning

Service not only benefits the population being addressed, but also those who are donating their time and talents toward helping others. Whether through volunteerism, community service or service learning, the effects of service can be seen on multiple levels:

  • For the individual, it is the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you are helping others and having a positive impact on your community, as well as the enriched learning and experience that takes place.
  • For the community college, it is continuing to build upon relationships with our surrounding community and to develop new relationships along the way.
  • For the community, it is creating a level of awareness and responsibility that extends across the community -- generating a group of individuals who take ownership in the needs and issues that surround them.

Once you begin to participate in service, you will find that you want to do more. The opportunities to serve are so numerous and varied, we’re confident that you will find the right fit for you.
