Tutoring for Community Users
The scope of learning assistance in the Extended Learning Center (ELC) is determined by the needs of the student populations we are charged to serve. The ELC strives to provide services to Lone Star College–Montgomery faculty, staff, and students that enhance and support classroom instruction and support the academic standards and requirements of Lone Star College–Montgomery. In addition, many of our services are available to community members. Those services include the following:
- Tutoring in the areas of computer applications, reading, writing, ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language), algebra, calculus, trigonometry, chemistry, biology, French, Spanish, Italian, and accounting .
- Community ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) Study Groups.
- Student Success Seminars: cognitive strategies and study skills.
- Discipline-Specific Seminars: reading, writing, computer, and math.
- THEA Preparation Seminars.
Tutoring in the areas listed above is available on a walk-in basis and takes place within the parameters of voluntary mediated learning. ELC tutors are trained to assist adult students in the learning process, rather than “teach” material as is done in the classroom. Computer, reading, writing, and math tutoring are available during most hours that the ELC is open; tutoring in the other subjects is available on a limited basis. We would like to remind parents of minor students that our tutors specialize in working with adults and most have no formalized training in tutoring younger students. With the goal of benefiting all who come to the ELC for tutoring assistance, the ELC staff have been asked to adhere to the following parameters with regard to tutoring community members (non-Lone Star College System students):
- Learners must bring their own books and/or materials.
- Learners under the age of seventeen must be accompanied by an adult, preferably a parent or someone who can observe and use the tutor’s helping strategies at home.
- ELC tutors must prioritize their help to Lone Star College–Montgomery students. 4) Appointments scheduled during off peak traffic hours may be required for community members needing extended help.
The individual service areas within the ELC may have more specific guidelines for working with community members. These specific guidelines can be obtained through any tutor in the area in which you are seeking assistance.
