Lone Star College System was recently ranked fifth nationally among leading associate’s institutions for international student enrollment by the International Educational Exchange. Last year LSCS was ranked sixth.

“This is an exciting recognition for Lone Star College System and shows that international students value our excellent academic programs, state of art campus resources, active student organizations, seamless transfer to four year institutions, and affordable tuition,” said Nithy Sevanthinathan, Lone Star College System director of international programs and services.

According to the Open Doors report published annually by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by seven percent to a record high of 623,805 in the 2007-2008 academic year. New international student enrollments rose by 10 percent, following an increases of 10 percent and eight percent for the previous two years.

LSCS proudly boasts more than 1,800 international students from more than 100 countries enrolled during the 2007-2008 academic year.

“I attribute the success of our international student program not only to the quality of targeted recruiting we do, but more importantly to the academic programs and services and support we provide international students once they have enrolled in LSCS,” he said.

LSCS international student support services include mandatory orientations, international specific student advisors, mentoring, campus involvement opportunities and more.

“While I attended Lone Star College-Kingwood, I was lucky to have so many professors who helped me to succeed not only academically but also socially, said former LSC-Kingwood international student, Juletta Palyan of Armenia.

“I became involved on campus, and soon I was acted in the ambassador program. LSC-Kingwood has a wonderful intercultural student organization which helps international students succeed in school,” she said.

“Community colleges are a very unique American enterprise, and it is a gem for international and American students. Our role of building a world class system is making sure that our students, American and international will have a global experiences of international understanding and friendship in our campuses,” said Sevanthinathan.

“What makes the ranking announcement even more special is that it comes during our International Education Week Celebration system-wide, Nov. 17-21,” he said.

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Lone Star College System consists of five colleges, including LSC-CyFair, LSC-Kingwood, LSC-Montgomery, LSC-North Harris, and LSC-Tomball, six centers and Lone Star College-University Center.
