LSCS Hosts Partner Luncheon for Home School Families

Lone Star College System recently hosted a home school partner luncheon with home school families across the LSCS service area.

“The purpose of the luncheon was to form an expanded partnership with the home school community and identify ways we can better serve them,” said Steve Lestarjette, LSCS associate vice chancellor for public affairs.

Home school parents, students and LSCS faculty and staff met for a working luncheon to discuss new opportunities to partner with home school families and to share resources that LSCS already provides to home school students.

LSCS faculty and staff made presentations during the luncheon regarding topics such as admissions, continuing education, academic opportunities, student engagement and enrichment and special services. Then breakout brainstorming sessions were held to identify specific areas LSCS could provide additional services to home school families.

“Our expectation with the formation of the home school partnership by Lone Star College System is that even better programs and offerings that will serve the home schooling community are just around the corner,” said Maria Morrow, home school parent and luncheon participant.

“We are already very pleased with our experience at Lone Star College-Montgomery for our twin daughters who took several dual credit classes, and are now enrolled full-time at LSC-Montgomery. The opportunity to take dual credit allowed an easy transition to a college pace, and their success thus far is greatly assisted by good professors and a great environment,” said Morrow.

“The next step will be for our home school committee to meet and address the needs and suggestions discussed at the luncheon. We will then form a home school parent advisory committee and all meet back in the upcoming weeks and months to report out and chart our plan of action,” said Lestarjette.

The home school partnership to offer enhanced services such as non-credit continuing education classes and additional testing and advising services is one of the many student success programs outlined in the LSCS 2008-2009 strategic initiatives.

“LSCS has terrific facilities and a faculty willing to assist home school students,” said home school parent and luncheon participant, Tim Kemrite.

“I'm excited about the guidance and educational opportunities that LSCS can provide my children,” he said.

Lone Star College System consists of five colleges, including LSC-CyFair, LSC-Kingwood, LSC-Montgomery, LSC-North Harris, and LSC-Tomball, six centers and Lone Star College-University Center. With more than 51,000 students in credit classes this fall, LSCS is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area and third largest community college system in Texas.
