Knit-In to Support Family Time Crisis and Counseling Shelter: The Door...

Article Body

Knitters from Lone Star College-Montgomery will hold a Knit-In on Saturday, October 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lone Star College-Montgomery in building A (second floor Commons) to support the Family Time Crisis and Counseling Shelter: The Door in Humble. They will also collect knitting supplies for the women and children of the shelter. Knitting needles, scissors, yarn, measuring tapes and tote bags are needed for these beginning knitters. Volunteers will take the donated supplies and knitted pieces to the shelter.

The Door is a temporary safe haven for victims of violence, which also offers services to assist in ending the cycle of violence. The primary program and focus is intervention, safety, counseling, guidance and other needed services in preparation for transition to a more permanent and stable environment. The staff of the shelter is trained to provide assistance and referrals for appropriate support: education, legal, vocational, and social services. Family Time Crisis and Counseling Shelter: The Door in Humble is located at 101 Main Street in Humble.

Linda Woodward, chair of art and humanities at LSC-Montgomery, is coordinating this event to support the shelter.

“Knitters have always been community minded as seen in the World War II efforts of knitting socks and other related items for the troops,” said Woodward. “Chemotherapy caps are often popular projects for knitting circles to donate as are baby caps for hospitalized infants. Coming together for a Knit-In to benefit The Door is only one aspect of a long legacy of knitting and charity.”

Woodward added, “Knitting circles are no longer just for a group of retired ladies. All ages and even men are actively learning and enjoying knitting. Knitters seek the relaxation and socialization of knitting for both functional and artistic expression as a divergence from stress whether from work or other sources. From the numbers of knitters seen in places of waiting, such as airports, or social gatherings and at home, it is apparent that this is a popular artistic medium.”

Knitting will allow shelter members to relax and create knitted materials for their families. The Knit-In is a kick-off to a continued service of working with shelter members, donating supplies and giving back to the community. Community members can participate with the Knit-In or provide donated knitting supplies. For more information, contact Linda Woodward at lwoodward@LoneStar.edu or call (936) 273-7228.
