Rex Koontz will present a lecture entitled, “America's Mediterranean: The Importance of the Mexican Gulf Coast in Ancient American Civilization” as part of the Lyceum Speaker Series at Lone Star College-Montgomery on Wednesday, October 8, at 6 p.m. in building B, room 102. There will be a “meet and greet” event with Koontz beginning at 5:30 p.m. prior to the presentation.

The Gulf Coast of Mexico was home to some Ancient American's earliest and most vibrant cultures. Long known for the precocious Olmec civilization, it is now clear that the Gulf Coast produced another striking civilization that is just now coming to light. Called Classic Veracruz by archaeologists, this culture held sway along the Gulf between AD 100-1000, trading with both the mountainous Central Mexican region and the Mayan people just to the east.

“This is a fascinating topic,” said Linda Woodward, chair of arts and humanities at LSC-Montgomery and director of the Lyceum Speaker Series. “We want the public to join us as we explore this little known region and its emerging archaeology and art.”
The Lyceum Speaker Series at LSC-Montgomery provides a variety of lectures throughout the semester that are based on sociological, historical, economic, political, psychological, and spiritual views.
All campus and community members are invited to attend this free lecture.
