Monthly Seminar Series Set for September 26

The Human Services Professional Institute (HSPI) at Lone Star College-Montgomery, which is designed to provide continuing education opportunities and develop partnerships with area human services agencies, will offer a seminar on Friday, September 26, focusing on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The $38 course, titled “ADHD: Where are we now?” runs from 9 a.m.-noon at the Lone Star College System’s Training Center, which is located at 5000 Research Forest Drive in The Woodlands. The seminar includes a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. (when registration/check-in begins).

The past 25 years have been characterized by intense scrutiny, discussion and debate regarding ADHD. This dialogue has ranged from struggling to understand the causes of the disorder, what treatment approaches are most effective, and whether adults can be diagnosed with ADHD. This seminar will address what has been learned about this disorder, where we are now with regard to understanding its cause and its treatment, and what are the major questions still left to be answered.

Registration #90980. Call 936.273.7446, or register on-site starting at 8:30 a.m.

HSPI complements the college's current human services program, which includes a two-year associate's degree and certificates for students seeking a career in social services.

The presenter is Sheri Gaines, MD, a licensed psychiatrist practicing in the Huntsville area. Gaines received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. She is board certified in adult, adolescent, and child psychiatry. Dr. Gaines has presented locally and nationally on a variety of topics including ADHD, depression, anxiety, psychopharmacology, and commitment of sexually violent predators.

Learning outcomes for this seminar include:

• Identify at least two known treatment approaches that have been proven to be effective in treating individuals with this disorder.
• Distinguish between at least two of the common psychotropic medications used today to treat individuals with this disorder.
