Are you looking to enter an established industry that offers longevity and a good salary?  Then consider training for a career in welding - one of several workforce skills awards programs offered by Lone Star College-Montgomery.

The welding technology workforce skills award consists of 11 welding classes that range from beginning level to offerings for the experienced welder looking to further his or her skill level. The program offers 12 welding booths and takes students through all of the education and hands on training needed to become a working welder.

Training is extensive and consists of how to run the torch, the plasma cutting machine, stick welding, TIG and beveling machines, as well as focusing on all of the safety observations that are required as part of the process.

The program has enjoyed an almost 100 percent hiring rate which is great job market news for welding graduates.

What is the cost to complete the program?

Approximately $2,328 (does not include textbooks or materials).

How long does it take to complete the program?

Eleven courses comprising 46.8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Is financial aid available?

To explore financial aid options visit the financial aid link on the LSC-Montgomery Web site, montgomery.lonestar.edu/20147 or call: 936.273.7227.

What do welders do?

Welders use hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand soldering, or brazing equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products to produce a 100 percent weld.

How is the job market?

According to the America's Career InfoNet Occupation Report, there will be a 5 percent increase in this field over the next seven years, which translates into more than 12,000 new jobs. And in Texas, welders make $13 to start and up to $28 per hour with experience, plus special overtime pay of time and a half. Many companies provide medical insurance for the employee and sometimes for their families for an additional amount. Other benefits include paid vacation, sick days and holidays.
