No doubt you've heard of "smart homes" where home security, audio/video, computer networks, electrical and structured wiring, heating and air conditioning, cable/satellite, broadband - and just about anything else you can think of - are all neatly linked together and controlled by just one panel.


More and more new home builders as well as retro-fitters moving to incorporate this technology into homes are in need of qualified technicians and the Lone Star College-Montgomery HTI+ workforce skills award program trains individuals for certification offered through the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).


After completing the program's four courses - which include Fundamentals of Network Technologies; HTI+; Residential Cabling and Professionalism in the Workforce - students take the CompTIA Home Technology Integration (HTI+) certification exam, which is a cross-industry, vendor-neutral credential providing recognition that a technical professional has attained a standard of excellence in the home networks industry.


The technician with a CompTIA HTI+ certification will be able to claim a distinct level of competence and differentiate themselves from the pack.

What programs are available?
The LSC-Montgomery continuing education department offers a HTI+ workforce skills award training program.
How long does it take to complete the program?
Three courses comprising 14.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
What is the cost to complete the program?
Approximately $738 (not including textbooks or materials).

What do HTI+ employees do?
Upon receiving CompTIA HTI+ certification, they install, integrate and troubleshoot automated home sub-systems including home security, audio/video, computer networks, electrical and structured wiring, HVAC, and cable/satellite, among others.
How is the job market and how much can I expect to earn?
There are currently more than 25,000 employers searching for certified personnel with an anticipated growth factor of 48percent to 58 percent in the next seven years! The salary ranges from $32,500 to $43,500 annually.

Audio Visual Systems Specialist


This program prepares students to work as technology specialists in conference centers, hotels, and churches.

Course Descriptions

Fundamentals of Networking Technologies Instruction in networking technologies and their implementation. Topics include the OSI reference model, network protocols, transmission media, and networking hardware and software. Textbook required. 4.8 CEUs. $198.

Home Technology Integration
Introduction to the integration and maintenance of various home technology subsystems. Including home automation, security and surveillance, home networks, video and audio networks, and structured wiring. 4.0 CEUs. $266.
Residential Cabling

Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student.

The residential environment includes single-family homes and multi-dwelling units. As more families want the ability to communicate throughout the home using voice, data (including the Internet), and video applications, structured cabling will become a common feature of residences. There has now become a need for training and understanding in cabling homes that will safely satisfy the requirements of the family members.

This course is designed to give this training and to certify the competency of the student. 4.0 CEUs. $266.
