NEW CLASSES STARTING SPRING 09!

Photo of ElectricianAre you interested in electricity?

Would you like a "hands-on" career that involves identifying and repairing problems?

Are you looking to enter an established industry that offers longevity and a good salary?

Then consider training for a career as an electrician - one of several workforce skills awards programs offered by Lone Star College–Montgomery. With a growing shortage of qualified electrical workers, it has never been a better time to join the electrical industry. There are plenty of job opportunities available in this high demand field.

Earning a certificate in the electrician workforces skills award program is the first step in a career ladder towards journeyman or master electrician. Graduates could also sit for the Texas Residential Wireman License exam after two years in residential wiring employment.

The electrician program provides hands on training and prepares individuals to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical devices, components, and equipment.

This program can take someone who has no knowledge at all about electricity and train them to become well-qualified technicians. And in this day and age of technology, nearly every field depends on electricity and electrical matters which means that qualified electricians enjoy a great job market.

Licensure for electricians has a number of specialized professions, all of which require varying amounts of theoretical knowledge and differing years of experience under the sponsorship of a master electrician.  And since Texas began requiring licensure for practicing electricians, there's no better time to start training.

How long does it take to complete the program?
The electrician skills award consists of five courses comprising 22.4 Continuing Education Credits (CEUs).
What is the cost to complete the program?
Approximately $950. (Does not include textbooks or materials.)
Is financial aid available?

To explore financial aid options visit the financial aid link on the Lone Star College–Montgomery Web site: montgomery.lonestar.edu/20147 or call: 936.273.7227.

What do electricians do?
Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures in new and existing construction and ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes. They may also install or service street lights, intercom systems, or electrical control systems.
How is the job market?
According to the America's Career InfoNet Occupation Report, there will be an increase in this field over the next seven years.
What can I expect to earn?
In Texas, technicians average $19.27 an hour and can earn more than $27.60 hourly, plus special overtime pay of time and a half. Beginning salaries in this field range from $9.38 to $12.50 an hour. Many companies provide medical insurance for the employee and sometimes for their families for an additional amount. Other benefits include paid vacation, sick days and holidays.
